Every cPanel account has a system mailbox. It's not one you'd normally use but it does collect system email messages and needs to be checked occasionally. Another source of mail in the system mailbox is bounced spam that has been sent from your account. Although you probably don't knowingly send spam from your account, spamming hackers may well have compromised your site and be using it to send out spam from time to time - without your knowledge and without being detected by network admins. Many of the addresses spammers send to are inactive or otherwise non-receptive and the emails bounce - back to the sender - in this case your system. Unfortunately they may end up in your system mailbox. Bounced spam can very quickly use up a lot of your account's storage allocation and the sudden loss of disk space can be the first indicator that your web hosting account has been hacked.
To check the system mailbox, list the account email addresses in cPanel. The system mail box is the last one listed in a section by itself. You will also see an approximate amount of space being occupied by mail messages in the mailbox. A few Kbs or even up to 100 Kbs is bearable and does not indicate anything sinister. But if you have several hundered Kbs or more you need to check it out. Click on the Webmail link next to the system mailbox and log in to Webmail. In the account Inbox you will see the message headers. Clicking on one will display the message contents. Hopefully you can work out why the email has been receieved by reading the contents. It could be a malfunctionsing script, or it could be bounced spam. Once you've determined the cuase and decided on a solution the next action is to delete the multitude of mail in the Inbox. Whichever method you use will be tedious, so teh sooner you start teh sooner you will finish.
