Wordpress website management software is the foundation software for the vast majority of small business websites active on the Internet. It is highly popular for a vast number of reasons and is a great foundation for any website. However it's popularity has a dark side and that is that it its weaknesses are also widely know to the cybercriminal community. Wordpress websites are a prime target for hackers and criminals.

In its default configuration Worpress is highly vulnerable to attack. This is not to fault Wordpress or the organisation that produces it. It is the responsibility of every user to configure security to their own requirements. The problem with this is that few website owners have the knowledge and skill to configure a secure site. They may depend on their website developer to do that for them or may be blissfully unaware that close attention to security is required to protect their online reputation and their online marketing investment.

All online security is a trade-off between ease or use and accessibility. The more secure a website is, the more effort will be required to access it. For the most common website functions, strong security will not interfere with accessibility, so teh impact on visitors will be minimal. Recognising this trade-off and the different levels of security that apply to website activities by small business, clickonIT has devised a three level Wordpress hardening regime that varies in impact, security and cost. We do not reveal the actual details of our Wordpress hardening process. Level 1 - this is the base level security. With this level implementation your site is immediately transformed from out-of-the-box into a custom installation that bechaves differently to the default configuartion. Most hackers will ignore your website ad move on to easier pickings without delay.

Level 2 - Medium level security deploys a range of measures against human and machine-initiated attacks while still allowing easy administration and visitor interactipn across a wide range of web-based functions.

Level 3 - High level Wordpress security. Very strong resistance to attack and damage and you will require some additional effort to administer the site. In most cases visitors will not notice the security, but if they do try anything suspicious they will be quietly blocked and redirected.

Wordpress hardening is achieved through a hybrid combination of tools and services to deliver the appropriate level of security for purpose at reasonable cost.
